Afghan police and the US-led coalition troops killed more than 40 Taliban militants in Kandahar province of southern Afghanistan, a coalition statement said on Thursday.

Militants attacked the combined forces on Wednesday near Alekowzi village of Sha Wali Kot district in northern Kandahar, the statement said.

The forces fought back and called in close air support, which destroyed the enemy firing positions, it added.

"More than 40 insurgents were killed in the engagement and no Afghan police or coalition soldiers were injured," it said.

Sha Wali Kot district has witnessed many ambushes against Afghan security forces and coalition troops over the past weeks, the statement said.

Since Aug 27, nearly 200 Taliban militants have been killed in the region, it added.
