Pakistan has made an urgent international appeal for aid as Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani said that the country cannot cope with the flood situation.

He termed it worse than the 2005 eartquake that hit the country. Gilani told reporters that the losses being caused by seasonal floods are "beyond the country's resources" however the government will not leave the flood affected people helpless.

Talking to the media during his visit to Sukkur Barrage on Sunday, he said that the unprecedented devastation caused by the current flood exceeded the destruction wreaked by the earthquake in 2005.

"The government will seek asistance from the international community after detailed estimation of the losses once the flood is over," Gilani said.
