Pakistani security forces on Thursday killed 10 militants and arrested one as military operation continued in the country's northwestern Swat Valley, a military statement said.

The security forces also recovered a large quantity of explosive from some houses in the Sarsanai village of Kabal district in Swat, the statement said.

Swat Valley in the North West Frontier Province (NWFP) was once a tourist region dubbed the "Switzerland of Pakistan" but has now turned into a safe haven for pro-Taliban militants.

The Pakistan Army launched an operation in the region in early August this year to retake control over a strategically important hilltop along the route used by militants to provide supplies to their colleagues in Afghan province of Kunar.

The conflicts in Swat and Bajaur areas have displaced around 400,000 people, who have moved to safer places in NWFP and Afghanistan.
