Pakistan and China's decision to launch a joint think tank became the butt of jokes for twitterati on Monday because of its acronym RANDI which, in Hindi, means prostitute.

According to Radio Pakistan website, Pakistan and China have decided to launch a new joint think tank dedicated to research and development of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC).

The decision to this effect was taken at a three-day conference held in the Chinese island of Hainan.

"Research and Development International" think-tank will have two co-chairpersons. Member of Parliament Madame Zhao Baige will represent China while Pakistani side will be represented by Senator Mushahid Hussain", said the website.

There were mixed reactions about the acronym on Twitter with some people joking about it while some chose to defend it.

Senior journalist Shekhar Gupta tweeted,"It took joint Pak-Chinese imagination to produce this marvellous 5-letter disaster of ACRONYMOLOGICAL proportions."

Another journalist Rana Ayyub said, "When a term like 'Randi' ( i cringe while typing ) trends on social media by a patriotic brigade, you know why there was a nirbhaya case !"

Fatima Bhutto, niece of former Pakistan Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto, @fbhutto said, "Well, that's an unfortunate name for a think tank."

Nivruti @Nivrutii tweeted, "Its not your fault, #China; but what's wrong with you, #Pakistan? Why such a name to your Think Tank? #Randi #ChinaPakistan

Twitter user NumbYaar had a humourous take on it, "That awkward moment when a think tank does not even think its name through. #RANDI".

But there were some who took on those making snide comments and defended the acronym.

Ra_Bies wrote, "Dear journos, FYI, #RANDI is Research And Development International, a Pakistan and China's joined think tank. It's not a sly. Thanks."
