Pakistani authorities on Monday claimed a man killed in firing along the border with India last week was an Indian national.

A police official in Hadiara told PTI that a case had been registered regarding the dead man’s attempt to cross the border illegally. He said a sub-inspector of the Pakistan Rangers was the complainant in the case and he had stated that the dead man was an Indian.

"Two receipts recovered from the man’s pocket suggested he was an Indian," the police official quoted the Rangers' personnel as saying.

Officials of India’s Border Security Force had earlier said the man, who was killed on Saturday, was a Pakistani national.

Pakistan Rangers and BSF had traded fire over the presence of the man near zero point on the border. Following the incident, officials of the forces have met twice to discuss the issue but the Pakistan Rangers have remained tight-lipped on the development.
