Pakistani troops killed 18 pro-Taliban militants in a fierce gunbattle in the restive Orakzai tribal region, after an attack on a checkpost, officials said on Friday.
Four injured militants were captured during the clash that occurred overnight in Baizot area of Orakzai Agency in northwest Pakistan, they said.
Security forces recovered the bodies of the 18 militants who were killed.
The militants beheaded the bodies of four of their accomplices and took away the heads so that troops could not identify them, officials said.
Three soldiers were also injured in the fighting.
Military officials have claimed that over 200 militants have been killed in Orakzai Agency since an operation was launched last month to flush militants out of the region.
The figure cannot be independently verified as journalists are barred from reporting from the conflict zone.
