Pakistan chief justice puts son in dock over business

world Updated: Jun 07, 2012 00:23 IST

Pakistan’s chief justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry put his own son, Arsalan Chaudhry, in the dock on Wednesday as media reports suggested that Arsalan was involved in dubious business deals worth over Rs 300 million in association with a known real estate developer of Islamabad.

Reports suggested real estate baron Malik Riaz, who is seen to be close to President Zardari, has bankrolled the business and foreign trips of Arsalan Chaudhry and documented all expenses. The media suggested that there was a big question mark on the source of these funds.

“It is the mother of all scandals,” said journalist Shaheen Sehbai, who first exposed this issue in an online interview from Washington on Monday.

Sehbai said that the funding was done to embarass chief justice Iftikhar Chaudhry. The Supreme Court and the executive are at loggerheads, with the court finding PM Gilani guilty of contempt.

In court on Wednesday, Arsalan Chaudhry told reporters that the media stroies against him were “baseless”.
