A rocket fired by Palestinian militants from the Gaza Strip exploded early on Tuesday in the southern Israeli town of Ashkelon, the Israeli army announced.

The blast caused damage but nobody was injured, a spokesman said.

Public radio said it was the first rocket to hit Ashkelon since a truce came into effect on January 18 ending the Israeli operation in the Gaza Strip during which more than 1,330 Palestinians were killed.
