A Philippine man sprayed houses in a farming village outside Manila with bursts of automatic weapon fire, killing eight people, several of them children, police said on Monday.
They said the man, who was apparently intoxicated, escaped after the shooting on Sunday night near the town of Calamba.
At least six people were wounded, police said.
"There's no rhyme or reason, there's no motive," said Senior Superintendent Felipe Roxas in a radio interview. He said the casualties were from two families who lived next to each other.
Empty shells from an M-16 rifle were recovered, he said.
The shooting comes two days after gunmen killed 10 employees of a bank in the nearby town of Cabuyao and emptied its vault. Nine of the dead were found lying on the floor of the branch while one man succumbed in hospital of gunshot injuries in the head. No arrests have been made.
