A plane carrying Peru's President Alan Garcia to Ecuador had to make an emergency landing in the city of Chiclayo in northern Peru on Monday, a presidential press official told AFP.
Jose Chirito, head of the presidential palace's press office, said Garcia's plane made an emergency landing after a crack was discovered in the windshield of the plane.
"The windshield of the plane had cracked and to avoid depressurization the plane had to land in Chiclayo," he said.
Garcia was travelling in the Peruvian Air Force Boeing 737 on his way to Ecuador, where he was scheduled to attend the inauguration of his counterpart Rafael Correa.
Chirito said Garcia still hoped to attend the swearing-in ceremony for Correa, who is beginning his second term in office.
