Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Tuesday expressed "shock and grief" over the death of at least 144 devotees in a stampede at a temple in Jodhpur.

“He has conveyed his sympathy and condolences to the bereaved families. He has also wished a speedy recovery to all the injured,” a statement from the Prime Minister's Office said.

Manmohan Singh arrived in Paris Monday on a two-day visit during which the two countries will sign three agreements, including a defining civil nuclear cooperation agreement.

In one of worst tragedies in Rajasthan, at least 144 people were killed and about 300 injured in a stampede that took place near the Chamunda Devi temple near Jodhpur on the occasion of the start of the Navaratri festival on Tuesday morning.
