The ruling United Progressive Freedom Alliance (UPFA) and the main opposition United National Party (UNP) are all geared up for Friday's elections for the north-western and central provincial council elections.

More than a dozen political parties and several independent groups are fighting in the election which will elect 56 representatives for the central province and 50 for the north-western council.

President Mahinda Rajapaksa, head of UPFA, has said Friday's election would be a referendum on the government's policies, especially the war being fought against the LTTE in the north.
