Polls opened on Sunday in Moscow and across western Russia for a presidential election likely to be won by Vladimir Putin's chosen successor Dmitry Medvedev.

Voting in the capital, the second city Saint Petersburg and territory up to the country's western borders, started at 8:00 am (0500 GMT). The election was already well underway in the eastern regions of the world's biggest country.
