Priti Patel, who was re-elected from the Witham constituency in the recently-concluded British elections, has been promoted as minister of state for employment as Prime Minister David Cameron constituted his new council of ministers on Monday.

Patel, 43, daughter of Gujarati immigrants from Uganda, was appointed to the junior post of exchequer secretary in July 2014. She has now been elevated as a minister of state who will attend cabinet meetings.

In the previous Cameron-led government, Patel was appointed ‘Indian Diaspora Champion’, and had taken the lead to organise Gujarat Day in the House of Commons.
