A search to find the most strange and quirkiest shop names in Britain has discovered an optician called Spex in the City, a chip shop called A Salt And Battery and a hairdresser named Curl Up And Dye.

More obvious names include Mr Chips for fish and chip shops as well as the Taj Mahal for Indian restaurants.

Business firm Thomson Local.com said it also discovered that the most popular name for a pub was the Red Lion, while predictable names for hairdressers were The Hair Shop, The Hair Studio or Reflections.

"The UK's independent businesses have had a hard time in the last two years but, as we slowly come out of recession, it's the businesses with the most memorable, quirky names that will truly stand out," the Scotsman quoted Mark Cox, from Thomson Local, as saying.
