Russian news agencies are reporting that a bus carrying 47 people has swerved off a road in Siberia and overturned, killing eight people including a child and wounding at least 38. Officials told the agencies that Monday morning's accident occurred not far from Tomsk in western Siberia.

They said the driver, who survived, was either having a conversation on his mobile phone or had fallen asleep at the wheel. Russian state television showed pictures of the roadside wreckage. The top half of the white bus had been completely crushed. Reports on the NTV network said the bus failed to make a sharp turn in the road and slid off. Russia's road safety record is among the worst in Europe.
