After marrying four times and ending up with a divorce each time, writer Salman Rushdie has said he does not believe in the institution of marriage.
The author said women rushed to the altar only because they wanted to wear a wedding dress. "The desire for wedding dresses must be true," said Rushdie.
In an interview to the Elle magazine, Rushdie said, "It's strange, given that I've married four times, but I actually don't think marriage is necessary. “Girls like it (marriage), especially if they have never been married before.”
Rushdie disclosed that he and Padma had sought marriage-counseling, but without success.
His latest view on marriage is being seen as the writer's decision not to tie the knot again. There were rumours that Rushdie was dating his new girlfriend, model Aimee Mullins.
Rushdie and Mullins had turned up at a Manhattan party earlier this month. The author broke off his marriage with his fourth wife Padma Lakshmi (37) recently. Mullins, however, has told friends that she and Rushdie are only 'close friends'.
