Indian death row prisoner Sarabjit Singh, who was attacked by two prisoners in a Lahore jail in Pakistan, is in "deep coma" and put on ventilator, Pakistani doctors told Indian officials today.
A Pak official has said that no surgery can be performed till Sarabjit Singh's condition stabilises, according to PTI report report.
"Doctors attending to Sarabjit Singh informed the Indian officials that he is in coma on ventilator and receiving IV drip," external affairs ministry spokesman Syed Akbaruddin said.
"The officials of India's High Commission in Islamabad obtained access to Sarabjit in the ICU of Jinnah hospital, Lahore at 2:00 am," he said.
Earlier, India had sought consular access to 49-year-old Sarabjit.Even as Sarabjit was in coma, doctors carried out X-rays, MRI, CT scans on him.
Doctors have been carrying out trauma control and await stabilisation in condition before further tests, Akbaruddin said.
Officials of India's High Commission at Jinnah Hospital in Lahore were in regular contact with Medical Board attending to Sarabjit.
Due to the brutal attack, Sarabjitr has suffered serious injuries on head, swelling on face and cuts on few places including abdomen.
Meanwhile, family of Sarabjit on Saturday rushed to Amritsar and were in touch with the High Commission for visa to visit him in the Lahore hospital.
“We are too worried and every news coming from across the border is scaring us, We immediately want to go to Pakistan and see the exact health of my brother, said Dalbir Kaur, sister of Sarabjit.
Stressing that despite threats no measures were taken to save Sarabjit, Swapandeep Kaur, elder daughter of Sarabjit said, “Ever since Afzal Guru was hanged, my father was getting threats in Pakistani jail and an inmate had even told that he will stab my father. We raised the issue with Indian Government but nothing has been done.”
The elder daughter also demanded that “My father has been in jail since 22 years. Now this brutal attack. I just want that he must be sent home on humanitarian grounds.”
My father has been attacked under a planned conspiracy.
Getting a call from Pakistan on Saturday morning, Dalbir Kaur said, “I have been told that Sarabjit is critical and it will take 18 hours before surgery is done on the head.
She also demanded that Pakistan needs to put best doctors on job and shift him outside country if needed.
The attack occurred when the victim and other prisoners were brought out of their cells for an hour-long break. The two prisoners assaulted Sarabjit with blunt objects and he sustained a severe head injury.
Sarabjit was initially taken to the hospital within the prison. After his condition worsened, he was moved in an ambulance to the state-run hospital, officials in Lahore said.
Sarabjit was convicted for alleged involvement in a string of bomb attacks in Punjab province that killed 14 people in 1990.
His mercy petitions were rejected by the courts and former Pak President Pervez Musharraf.
The outgoing Pakistan Peoples Party-led government put off Sarabjit's execution for an indefinite period in 2008.
Sarabjit's family says he is the victim of mistaken identity and had inadvertently strayed across the border in an inebriated state.
