Seven 'terrorists' killed in southern Turkey: report

world Updated: Apr 02, 2011 08:08 IST

The Turkish army has killed seven "terrorists" in clashes in a southern province bordering Syria, Anatolia news agency reported on Friday, without saying to which group the militants belonged.

Acting on a tip-off that militants had sneaked in from Syria, the soldiers confronted the group near the town of Hassa, in the Mediterranean province of Hatay, Anatolia reported.

The militants responded with fire to calls to surrender and seven were killed in the ensuing fighting, it said.

Local military officials contacted by AFP would not comment.

Separatist rebels from the outlawed Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK), listed as a terrorist group by Ankara and much of the international community, are active in the area, which is close to the predominantly Kurdish southeast.

Last year, PKK militants fired rockets at a naval base in Hatay, killing seven soldiers.
