A Hong Kong taxi driver and five passengers were killed in a traffic smash today after the driver of a lorry lost control of his vehicle and smashed onto the taxi's roof, police said.
The driver of the goods vehicle failed a breathalyser test and has been arrested on suspicion of drink-driving and dangerous driving causing death, a police spokesman told AFP. The lorry driver suffered minor injuries.
The crash happened at 0440 IST on a road close to Kwu Tung district, near the Chinese border in the northern, rural part of the city, the spokesman said.
Television footage showed the lorry on its side and the taxi flipped over and severely crushed.
Major accidents are rare in Hong Kong, where roads tend to be narrow and speeds are restricted, although the roads crisscrossing the more rural areas are dotted with accident blackspots.
