Slain woman journalist declared martyr

Nepal Prime Minister Prachanda on Saturday declared woman journalist Uma Singh, killed by armed group in Janakpur on January 12 as martyr and awarded around Rs 63,000 as compensation to her family members, according to official sources.

Twenty six year old journalist Singh was working for a private radio and a newspaper in Janakpur and actively campaigned for women's rights.

"The government's announcement was positive but we will not halt the agitation until and unless the government initiates legal action against the culprits after conducting probe into the incident", said Dharmendra Jha, president of the Federation of Nepalese Journalists.

A team of journalists led by FNJ president Jha today met Prime Minister Prachanda and handed over a memorandum demanding stern action against the culprit. The FNJ has been launching daily protests for the past three days to oppose the killing. FNJ has also staged a sit-in at the Home Ministry today demanding security to journalists.
