A small plane and a helicopter collided and crashed on Saturday over New York's Hudson River, the US Coast Guard said. The number of people aboard the aircraft and the number of casualties were not immediately known, it said.
NY1 television reported that firefighters had rescued one person from the water. The channel showed live footage of rescue craft in the river between Manhattan and New Jersey.
"The two of them dove in the same direction and hit the water and then I heard an explosion," a witness told NY1 after watching from his apartment building.
This January an Airbus jet operated by US Airways lost power over New York but the pilot made a successful splash landing in the Hudson, just off Manhattan, with no loss of life.
