Solve crisis before my return from India, Nepal Prez tells parties

Nepal President Ram Baran Yadav has urged political parties to resolve the ongoing political and constitutional crisis in the country before he returns from India later this week.

Yadav made the request to leaders of political parties represented in the dissolved Constituent Assembly before embarking on his six-day official visit to India on Monday afternoon.

“I wish you all are successful in arriving at required conclusions to give a way out (of the crisis) to the country before my return from India,” he stated in a written statement.

Yadav asked parties to find common grounds of agreement at the earliest so that the next parliamentary elections could be held and the country’s new constitution promulgated.

He also sought consensus among parties to select a new prime minister to head the national unity government and ways to fill vacant posts in constitutional bodies and the Supreme Court.

Since the parties have failed to forge agreement despite several deadlines issued by him since November 23, Yadav asked them to suggest other democratic means through which the crisis can be resolved.

As the last deadline for consensus expired on Saturday Yadav issued a separate notice on Monday giving parties another time limit till December 29 to reach agreement.

Nepal’s current crisis began in May following dissolution of the Constituent Assembly and subsequent bickering among parties to head the unity government responsible for holding the next elections.
