The leader of India's ruling party, Sonia Gandhi, arrived in South Africa on Tuesday for a three-day visit in a bid to strengthen ties between the two nations, the foreign ministry said.

Gandhi was expected to meet President Thabo Mbeki and former president Nelson Mandela as well as several senior members of South Africa's ruling African National congress.

The Italian-born leader of the ruling Congress party was in the country "to strengthen and consolidate political, economic, trade and cultural relations between the peoples of South Africa and India."

Her trip comes after Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh paid a visit to South Africa last October.
