The Sri Lanka Air Force bombed a Tamil rebel boat factory on Friday in the northern part of the country, a military official said.

The bombing took place in Murukkandi, 380 kms north of Colombo, shortly after dawn.

The air force said it confirmed that the factory of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) was destroyed in the attack, the official said.

Over the past three months, the air force has stepped up aerial attacks on the rebel-controlled northern parts of the country. The leader of LTTE's political wing, SP Thamilselvan, was among those killed in the bombardments.
