Sri Lankan state television on Tuesday broadcast video footage of what it said was the body of Tamil Tiger leader Velupillai Prabhakaran, with the face of the rebel leader visible.
The images, also carried by the private Swarnavahini channel, showed the upper section of a corpse which was dressed in camouflage uniform.
Part of the forehead was covered with a blue cloth, and the head was resting on a bloodstained newspaper.
The face was intact, with the eyes wide open, and bore a clear resemblance to the rebel leader.
The images broadcast on state television also showed Prabhakaran's dog tag with the marking '0.01' and his Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) identity card.
