A powerful 6.0-magnitude earthquake shook the mid-Atlantic Ocean east of the Caribbean, the US Geological Survey has reported.

The quake struck 1,802 kilometers east-northeast of Saint John's, Antigua, at a depth of 10 kilometers at 0203 IST today (5:33 pm local time yesterday), according to a preliminary USGS report.

A National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration tsunami scientist, Bill Knight, told AFP the quake was a "sub-threshold event" that did not merit a tsunami warning.
