A strong 6.3-magnitude quake shook Vanuatu in the South Pacific today, the US Geological Survey said.

The quake struck at a depth of 53 km about 62 km west-northwest of the capital Port-Vila at 8:44 pm (1514 IST), it said.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre in Hawaii did not issue any warning related to the quake.

Vanuatu sits on the so-called Pacific Rim of Fire, where the meeting of continental plates causes high volcanic and seismic activity.
