At least five persons were killed when a suspected US drone carried out a missile strike in Pakistan's restive South Waziristan tribal region, considered the main base of local Taliban commander Baitullah Mehsud.
Three missiles fired by the drone hit a madrassa or seminary and a residential compound located about 15 km from Wana, the main town in South Waziristan Agency, officials were quoted as saying by TV news channels.
The identity of the five persons killed in the attack could not immediately be ascertained.
The Pakistani military has been using gunship helicopters and artillery to pound Taliban positions in South Waziristan ahead of a planned offensive against Mehsud and his network.
Thousands of people have fled the region in the past few days due to fears of a military operation.
