A militant organisation, Ansar ul Islam (AI), a rival of the Lashkar-e-Islam (LeI), has asked the government to try Dr Shakeel Afridi for the murder of over 250 tribesmen at the hands of LeI men, and sought an increase in the sentence awarded to the doctor.

According to The News, AI members alleged that Afridi had links with the banned LeI led by Mangal Bagh. They accused Afridi of murdering 250 tribespersons and collaborating with LeI and alleged that he had provided treatment to the LeI men.

Afridi was sentenced to 33 years of imprisonment by Pakistan after he was found “guilty” of helping the Central Intelligence Agency track down al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden. “The arrest and release of Afridi was a drama staged by the LeI to accomplish their nefarious agenda through him,” an AI member said.

AI said Afridi was on its side in the early days of his job but later joined hands with the LeI.
