Police in Bangladesh are investigating an email sent to various media houses reportedly by banned Islamist group Ansarullah Bangla Team threatening ‘severe consequences’ in case they took a stand favouring atheist bloggers and against the group’s ‘jihadi’ movement.
In the email sent to several local media on Monday, the group reportedly said that newspapers and other media must follow their directives, which includes sacking of female journalists, as it describes women working outside as anti-Islamic, Dhaka Tribune newspaper has reported.
“We are aware of the email and are trying to determine who sent it and from where,” said Muntasirul Islam, a deputy commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police who deals with media.
Ansarullah Bangla Team, which has allegedly claimed responsibility for killing four atheist bloggers this year, said that its directives would be the ‘law for you (media) from today’.
“The consequences will be severe if you do not walk the path of Islam. Towering buildings will crumble to the ground, your heads will roll at the feet of the soldiers of Islam,” reported bdnews24.com online outlet, which is among the media houses that received the email.
