Ramos-Horta said he had consulted widely before making his decision but decided he could not leave the president's post a little over one year into his five-year term.

East Timorese President Jose Ramos-Horta said on Friday he would not seek the job of UN High Commissioner for Human Rights because to do so would place an unfair burden on his country.

Ramos-Horta said he had consulted widely before making his decision but decided he could not leave the president's post a little over one year into his five-year term.

"I have decided not to put forward my name as a candidate for high commissioner of human rights," he told a press conference.
