Translate words into action, Oxfam tells UN

An international organisation providing humanitarian aid to the people of Gaza asked UNSC to take immediate steps to translate the words contained in its ceasefire resolution into "meaningful change on the ground."

An international organisation providing humanitarian aid to the people of Gaza on Friday asked the UN Security Council to take immediate steps to translate the words contained in its ceasefire resolution into "meaningful change on the ground."

"The Security Council must ensure that the words in the Resolution quickly translate into meaningful change on the ground," Oxfam said after the UNSC voted in favour of a resolution seeking "immediate and durable" ceasefire in Gaza leading to a full Israeli withdrawal.

The resolution would give hope to civilians caught in cross fire only if it is implemented and makes difference to their lives, said Nicole Widdersheim, Oxfam International's Head of Office in New York.

"There has been enough suffering for all civilians who now seek a return to some sort of normality after 13 days of horrific violence," Widdersheim said.

The resolution came on the 14th day of the Israeli offensive in Gaza, as the international outcry reached a crescendo over the death of more than 750 Palestinians, including a large number of women and children, in the Tel Aviv's action.
