The 26-year-old war between the Sri Lankan army and the LTTE seemed to be entering its final phase with the military claiming to have entered the last rebel-held town in the north-eastern district of Mullaitivu.

The defence ministry said intense fighting had ensued between troops of 58 Division and rebel cadres in and around Puthukudiyiruppu since Monday.

Meanhwile, Sri Lanka’s elusive Tamil Tiger leader is not expected to surrender despite having lost his de-facto state, but may try to flee by boat, the country's top defence official said on Tuesday. Tiger chief Prabhakaran could use a human smuggling ring to escape by sea, he said.
