Burkina Faso state television says at least 11 people were killed after a truck collided with two buses.
Jean Ouedraogo, a resident in the town of Boromo where the vehicles collided on Wednesday, says one of the buses was headed for Mali and the other was driving toward Burkina Faso's capital nearly 110 miles (180 kilometres) northeast. Ouedraogo said there were Mali, Burkina Faso and Senegal nationals among the dead.
State TV said the accident occurred after the buses tried to overtake the truck. It reported that at least 40 people were injured in the accident and have been taken to hospitals.
Road accidents are common across West Africa. Buses are frequently overcrowded and the poorest people often ride to their destinations on the top of trucks moving goods to market.
