Ukrainians began to vote for a new president on Sunday, choosing between opposition leader Viktor Yanukovich and Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko after the two fought a fierce election campaign.

Many commentators predict a narrow victory by Yanukovich, but the fiery Tymoshenko is threatening to summon protesters in a replay of the 2004 "Orange Revolution" if she deems the second-round election unfair.

Any challenge to the result would dash hopes that the country quickly returns to stability to focus on improving ties with Russia and the EU and restart a $16.4 billion IMF programme for the crisis-hit economy.
