The UN special envoy to Myanmar is heading to the country as Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon debates a possible visit to the military-ruled Southeast Asian nation. UN officials said Ibrahim Gambari left New York on Wednesday to lay the groundwork for a possible visit by the UN chief.
Ban told the Associated Press on Tuesday that he was looking at the "appropriate timing" for a visit.
Ban is scheduled to visit Japan from June 30 to July 2 and could visit Myanmar afterwards.
He said he may have to make a decision soon.
