Welcoming President Barack Obama's decision to close detention camps at Guantanamo Bay, a US-based Muslim group has said the move was a step in aligning the country's policies with traditional American values.

"We are pleased to see President Obama following through with his promises to end some of the shameful practices that have harmed our nation's moral authority in the world in recent years," said Nihad Awad, Executive Director of Council of American-Islamic Relations.

"These executive orders are an important first step to restoring the rule of law and aligning our security policies with traditional American values."

The group has urged for years that the prisons at Guantanamo be shut down, Awad added.
