At least two western diplomats, including the US and Italian ambassadors, were slightly injured in a suspected rebel attack in the eastern Sri Lankan town of Batticaloa on Tuesday, defence officials said.

The ambassadors representing Sri Lanka's international donor community were accompanying the Minister of Human Rights and Disaster Management Mahinda Samarasinghe on a tour of the district.

The diplomats and the minister had alighted from the Sir Lanka Air Force helicopter and were walking towards the buses when mortars fired by suspected Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) cadres landed near the site around 8:35 a.m. local time (0305 GMT).

At least three police special task force (STF) personnel, two policemen and an air force personnel were also injured.
