US President Barack Obama said in an interview with CNN that he is “very close” to a decision on boosting troop levels in Afghanistan and would make an announcement “in the next several weeks”.

Obama said he did not want his successor as president to inherit the Afghan conflict, adding that a “multi-year occupation” would not serve the interests of the US.

In another development, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said that Afghanistan faced a critical moment on the eve of President Hamid Karzai’s inauguration for a second five-year term.
