The death toll from a massive tornado that ravaged a Missouri town has risen to 122 and is expected to rise, making it the deadliest single US twister in six decades, officials said on Tuesday.

Officials said that 750 people have been treated in hospital after 8,000 structures were destroyed in the massive twister Sunday that cut a swath of destruction four miles (6.4 kilometers) long and three quarters of a mile (more than a kilometer) wide through the town of Joplin.

According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), the previous highest death toll from a single tornado was recorded in Flint, Michigan in 1953 with 116 fatalities.

Officials said that the tornado ranks as the 8th deadliest in America's history.
