The administrator of a Venezuelan prison says at least eight inmates are dead and 16 injured after a surge of violence.
Eli Salgado of Sabaneta prison in the western state of Zulia says three people were killed and five wounded when inmates were handling an explosive device and it went off.
He told reporters that fighting broke out later when prisoners from that cellblock were moved to another area. He said at least five were killed and 11 injured in the unrest on Friday.
Salgado said on Saturday that the situation in the facility had returned to normal.
Killings are frequent in Venezuela's prisons. The watchdog group Venezuelan Prisons Observatory has recorded more than 260 violent deaths so far this year.
