A radical Muslim preacher wanted dead or alive by American and Yemeni authorities called on Muslim scholars in a videotape released on Monday to promote jihad against US, Israeli and Iranian interests in the region.

Anwar al-Awlaki made the call in a video recording posted on Islamist websites on Monday.

It appears to have been made before a foiled plot involving explosive packages sent from Yemen on planes bound for the United States.

Awlaki said Muslim clerics should do more to encourage organised armed resistance to foreign intervention.
