The deadly unrest in the restive Chinese region of Xinjiang is exclusively an internal affair of China, the Russian foreign ministry said on Wednesday.
In a statement, it said that Russia considers Xinjiang, populated by both Han Chinese and Muslim Uighurs, an "integral" part of China.
"The events there are an exclusively internal matter for the People's Republic of China," the statement said.
"We hope that the actions of the Chinese authorities to support social order in Xinjiang, which have been taken in line with the law, will allow a swift normalization of the situation in the region," it added.
On Sunday 156 people died and more than 1,000 were injured in riots in the regional capital Urumqi, which the authorities blamed on Muslim Uighurs.
Xinjiang's eight million Uighurs make up nearly half the population of the region, a vast area of deserts and mountains rich in natural resources that borders ex-Soviet Central Asia.
