Bizzare sacrifice

In a bizarre and senseless sacrifice to invoke divine blessings for victory of Indian team in World Cup semi-finals, a youth made an offering of his tongue to the presiding deity at a village temple at Ponneri in Vellore district of Tamil Nadu on Thursday.

Sudhakar, 21, was brought to government hospital in Vellore at around 2 p.m. bleeding profusely from the mouth and the tip of his tongue missing. The doctors attended to him immediately and now he is stable. But obviously he cannot speak, as the tip of the tongue, so essential for clear speech is missing. At best he can utter few words.

The hospital doctors also took the opinion of the dental surgeon, who has ruled out reconstruction of the tongue as the family members did not bring the portion that was allegedly cut off by the boy himself. Initially the family members maintained that it was an accident that occurred when Sudhakar climbed a papaya tree with a knife in his mouth and he fell down.

But later it transpired that he had cut off his tongue as an offering to the local presiding deity to bless the Indian team and make it win in the semi-final match against Australia.

Indian’s team’s position had become precarious when it was chasing a huge target of 329 runs for victory.

Doctors at the hospital say that the boy can never get his tongue back as the portion is missing. The best that can be done is reconciliation and speech therapy.
