Ludhiana hospitals operating sans fire safety equipment

Out of the 300 hospitals and nursing homes operating in Ludhiana, only 75 hospitals have received a fire-safety certificate from the fire department. All others, including the government-run Lord Mahavira Civil Hospital, do not have a fire-safety certificate, which is mandatory as per norms.

Ludhiana MC mum on Sutlej pollution due to waste going in Buddha Nullah

The Central Pollution Control Board has sought a report from the MC commissioner over the status of the 12 outlets of the civic body that release untreated effluents into the Buddha Nullah that meets the Sutlej river at Walipur village. While the municipal corporation has turned a blind eye towards this issue, the Buddha Nullah has long polluted the waters of the river.

Safety kits in short supply, will sewermen’s death change things?

The death of two sewermen Sonu and Mehar Chand, who went down the manhole for cleaning a sewerline in Nirankari Mohalla on Friday, once again brings to fore the shortage of the safety kits for these workers. In violation of the law - the latest being the Prohibition of Manual Scavenging Act, 2013 - against ‘hazardous cleaning’, officials of the Ludhiana municipal corporation continue to send sewermen - without wearing safety kits into a manhole. More often than not, the workers suffocate to death.
