Six days ago (on March 12) when 65-year-old Harbans Kaur of Kishangarh, Bhogpur, was admitted with stroke symptoms, she was not even able to speak. She was admitted in the emergency ward of the Shaheed Babu Labh Singh civil hospital here with a paralysed body.

A mobile phone call helped the city police to crack the mystery behind the murder of businessman’s wife, her daughter-in-law and their guest in posh Lajpat Nagar locality in Jalandhar on Thursday evening.

Jalandhar Rs 3 crore gold heist: mastermind nabbed

The prime accused in robbery of gold (worth Rs 3 crore) and Rs 30,000 cash at the unguarded Manappuram Finance Company’s Rama Mandi branch has been arrested by Odisha police. A team is set to visit the state on February 16, to bring the accused here. The city police have also procured production warrant of the accused.

Booth officers to find reasons for low turnout in Jalandhar in 2012 polls

In the previous assembly election held in 2012 out of a total of 1,54,169 voters as many as 53,684 people did not exercise their franchise at 182 polling booths across the nine legislative constituencies . The booths have been identified as ‘low turnout booths’. Concerned over this, the district electoral officer (DEO)has ordered 182 booth level officers (BLOs) to conduct a survey in their areas regarding the matter.

Punjab polls: Only 19 third gender voters registered in Jalandhar

The third gender voters are yet to come out of the closet to declare their genders in the voters’ lists.As of now 19 have registered themselves in the third gender category voters, for the upcoming assembly elections in the district. The district has 14.90 lakh voters as per the fresh list of eligible voters on December 31 including 7.79 lakh male and 7.10 lakh female voters.

With the upcoming polls the election commission has ordered the drug- police departments to crackdown on habit forming drugs which can be used to lure the voters. Drugs worth 8 lakh have been seized by the departments in 30 joint raids in just a fortnight in the district.

At a time when the state government is unveiling major projects daily expecting declaration of assembly poll schedule anytime to bring the model code of conduct into force but apparently it forget to take any notice of the museum project dedicated to Shaheed Bhagat Singh at his native village, Khatkar Kalan, in the district. The work for the said project is lying stalled second time in this year.

In a clear example of apathetic attitude, the district health department has failed to launch a national health programme which was started by the Union ministry of health and family welfare in August 2016. The health scheme, Mothers Absolute Affection (MAA), is dedicated towards the promotion of breastfeeding.

282 children died in 237 days of this year in the district before celebrating their fifth birthday, reveals a report of child death review committee (CDRC). The deaths occurred due to preventable causes which raise questions on the implementation of the health programmes under child health care.

Road mishaps in Jalandhar: 167 people died in 2 years, only 3 cases registered by police

From January 1, 2015 to November 30 this year, as many as 167 people lost their lives in 165 road accidents under the jurisdiction of the city police, but only three cases were registered under stringent Section 304 (punishment for culpable homicide not amounting to murder) of the IPC, including two in which cops had died.
