Cancer cases down, no relief but

Blame it on ignorance of cancer patients or lack of awareness campaigns, the much-hyped Chief Minister Cancer Relief Fund Scheme seems to be losing its sheen in the district. Started in the year 2010 with the motive of providing better treatment facilities, the number of cancer patients registered under the scheme for financial aid has been decreasing every year.

The police here today rounded up six family members, including the mother, stepfather and maternal uncle, of a girl from Khanna who was found to have been raped, strangulated to death and then thrown into a canal. After the body of the girl was found in a canal in Dhanaula, around 15km from here, on August 4, and the post-mortem confirmed rape and murder, the police had suspected the hand of the girl's family who may have killed her over her alleged love affairs.

For the last four months, farmers of three villages-Ratonla, Kharyal and Khrayali in Sangrur district-travel extra eight kilometres to reach their farms.The reason for the plight of the farmers of these villages is a damaged bridge near Dirba.Built over a canal passing through Ratonla village, the 50-year-old bridge caved in from the centre earlier this year. Since then only two-wheelers and occasional light vehicles cross the bridge-that too at their own risk.
