Toyota has announced that airbags will standard across its range in India. The manufacturer has already added airbags to the list of standard equipment on its Etios sedan and the Etios Liva hatchback. Toyota will now equip the base G trim of the Innova with an airbag as well though the base trims might just come equipped with a driver airbag instead of dual airbags.
The carmaker recently updated its line-up with cosmetic tweaks and the Innova is in line next. It will get rear AC vents besides certain cosmetic enhancements. Sanjay Kirloskar, chairman and managing director, Kirloskar Group, had said that they will be taking steps to ensure that the cars are safer, by offering airbags across all their models as standard. By adding airbags as standard Toyota's cars will not only get safer but they will also distinguish themselves from their peers. For example, the Liva’s direct rivals such as the Hyundai i10, Maruti Swift and the Honda Brio don’t offer airbags as standard.
Toyota has not revealed the impact of this decision on the pricing of their cars, but the price of all Toyotas is likely to increase by around Rs 40,000. The Innova variants equipped with airbags is expected to reach showrooms in first few months of 2015.
