BMW 5 Series production starts at Chennai plant, launch on June 29

German automaker BMW on Tuesday kicked off production of its new 5 Series luxury sedan at its Chennai Plant. The new 5 Series will hit the market on June 29.

The BMW 5 Series will be offered in three engine configurations – a 520d with a 2.0-litre diesel engine, a 530d with a 3.0-litre diesel engine and 520i with a 2.0-litre petrol engine, all connnected to an eight-speed automatic gearbox.

BMW will pit the new 5 Series against the Mercedes-Benz E Class, the Audi A6, the Jaguar XF, the Lexus ES and the Volvo S90, all of which are priced from Rs 52 to 75 lakh.

“The all-new BMW 5 Series that will be launched this month has everything that is needed to take the Indian luxury car segment by storm. I would like to congratulate the Plant Chennai team for achieving this important milestone and we are extremely proud for the smooth start of production of the all-new BMW 5 Series,” Vikram Pawah, president, BMW Group India said in a statement.

Plant head Jochen Stallkamp said, “Today, BMW Plant Chennai is proud to start the roll out the all-the new 5 Series with highest standards of quality, distinguished workmanship and uncompromising engineering. We are confident that the all-new BMW 5 Series produced in Chennai will further increase our momentum in the Indian luxury car segment.”

The BMW Plant Chennai has a production capacity of 11,000 units annually, where the Munich-headquartered automaker produces the BMW 1 Series, the BMW 3 Series, the BMW 3 Series Gran Turismo, the BMW 5 Series, the BMW 7 Series, the BMW X1, the BMW X3 and the BMW X5.
